This week congregation members met to continue the thinking initiated by the Congregational Away Day in September 2023. Specifically, how can we build awareness and connections between our Sunday congregation (members and visitors) and the many hundreds of people (young and old) who cross the threshold of our building almost every week of the year. In the light of those discussions, the following might be of interest โ it originally appeared in Revd David Donald Scottโs, Blog on the Learig.

David Fergusson, Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, and Kirk minister has just produced a series of essays on theology, philosophy and the Church. One is entitled, โMapping the Church โ Current Challenges of History and Missionโ. In it, he tackles the issue of mission in the Church. He begins by acknowledging that mission is a constituent part of the Churchโs work not least in handing on the faith to those who are coming after us. But he points out that the โFive Marks of Missionโ which have been embedded into our current thinking are not comprehensive.
โThe church has many functions,โ he writes, โthe glorifying of God in its worship, the education and nurture of its people, the pastoral care of the sick and the dying, and the bearing witness to the gospel in the life of the world.โ Mission is one of several aspects of being the Body of Christ. He recognises that there is a mistaken view in some quarters that by focusing our attention and resources on mission we will be able to reverse the decline in church attendance and membership. โSecularisation is not the fault of the church,โ he says, โthis is where we simply find ourselves.โ We are living in a changed landscape, and it isnโt our fault. โA missional strategy that is based upon returning to a position of cultural pre-eminence is profoundly mistaken.โ he argues. โTo impose too many missional obligations on the church may actually be to its detriment.โ

I agree. Let the church flourish in a more humble state and in a more convincing relationship with its parish. โMany of the churches that continue to flourish are those with strong connections to their surrounding communities and are able to offer lively worship and a range of activities for people of all ages.โ he observes. โThe embeddedness of churches in their localities is what earns them respect, especially where this is evident in forms of service and support to hard-pressed people. The parish model continues to have traction in different places.โ
St Columbaโs has no official โparish areaโ, but we have opportunities to foster strong connections with the โcommunitiesโ that regularly enter our doors. Connections that might encourage others โ and others who might encourage us. As E M Forster wrote in Howardโs End, โOnly connect.โ

The book after that one will be Colm Toibinโs Brooklyn. New members to the book club are welcome, for more information please contact the church office.

News from the GKexperience

We received the following news from Calum Johnston, youth worker with the GKe. โTo let you know that we have had another very successful residential season here at GK. This included our first ever foreign residential to Italy, (supported by the Murray J Napier Fund), Mountain Biking in Aviemore, a girls road trip around Scotland and a trip to the Isle of Mull staying at the Camas Centre. I was just looking ahead to what is coming after the summer and got very excited at the thought of being able to return to St Columbas! Please pass on my best wishes to the rest of the congregation.โ The young people of GKexperience will be bringing staying at St Columbaโs 22nd โ 24th November. It will be a real pleasure to welcome them back.

Every year the staff, volunteers and supporters of Restart Lives spend one night outside. Although there is much that separates the experience of the controlled environment of the Sleepout from that of a person living life on the streets, we hope the event will help all those who participate to imagine what London’s homeless have to contend with.
We can only accommodate 80 sleepers at this event, so if you would like to reserve your spot, donโt delay and sign up now
