(TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST)

Welcome

Call to Worship

Introit: I will lift up mine eyes, Walford Davies (1869-1941)

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh even from the Lord: who hath made heaven and earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
And he that keepeth thee will not sleep.
Behold, he that keepeth Israel:
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord himself is thy keeper:
The Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand.
So that the sun shall not burn thee by day:
Neither the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:
Yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in:
From this time forth for evermore.

Call to Worship

Hymn 6 God shall endure for aye; (Stroudwater) (Psalm 9)
{During the hymn wreathes are laid at the communion table by representatives of the congregation}

1 God shall endure for aye; he has
for judgement set his throne
to rule the nations equally,
justice to give each one.

2 God also will a refuge be
for those who are oppressed;
a refuge he will be in times
of trouble to distressed.

3 And they who know your name, in you
their confidence will place:
for you have not forsaken them
who truly seek your face.

4 Sing, then, sing praises to the Lord
on Zion’s sacred hill;
let all the earth be made aware
of God’s work and God’s will.

Prayers of Approach & Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power and the glory for ever, Amen.

Call to Remembrance

The Tryst
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Congregation: We will remember them

Hymn 260 Eternal Father strong to save (Melita)
{After the hymn our young people are invited to go to Sunday School activities, before rejoining congregation at service end}

1 Eternal Father, strong to save,
whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
who bade the mighty ocean deep
its own appointed limits keep:
Oh, hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

2 O Christ, whose voice the waters heard
and hushed their raging at thy word,
who walked upon the foaming deep,
and calm amid the storm didst sleep:
Oh, hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

3 O Holy Spirit, who didst brood
upon the waters dark and rude,
and bid their angry tumult cease,
and give, for wild confusion, peace:
Oh, hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.

4 O Trinity of love and power,
shield all of them in danger’s hour;
from rock and tempest, fire and foe,
protect them whereso’er they go:
thus evermore shall rise to thee
glad hymns of praise from land and sea

Old Testament Reading: Micah 4: 1-8

In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s temple
shall be established as the highest of the mountains
and shall be raised up above the hills.
Peoples shall stream to it, and many nations shall come and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.

For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken. For all the peoples walk, each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.

On that day, says the Lord, I will assemble the lame
and gather those who have been driven away and those whom I have afflicted. The lame I will make the remnant, and those who were cast off, a strong nation, and the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion
now and forevermore And you, O tower of the flock, hill of daughter Zion, to you it shall come, the former dominion shall come, the sovereignty of daughter Jerusalem.

Gospel Reading: Luke 1:68-79

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his child David,
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors and has remembered his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,
to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies,
might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness in his presence all our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. Because of the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Anthem: Greater love, Ireland (1879-1962)

Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can the floods drown it.
Love is strong as death.
Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead, should live unto righteousness:
Ye are wash’d, ye are sanctified, ye are justified,
in the name of the Lord Jesus;
Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation;
That ye should shew forth the praises of him
who hath called you out of darkness, into his marvellous light;
I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God,
that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service

Sermon

Anthem: Lacrimosa (from Requiem) Mozart (1756-1791)

Lacrimosa dies illa,
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus
Huic ergo parce, Deus,
Pie Jesu, Domine,
Dona eis requiem.

Full of tears will be that day
when a guilty man will rise from the ash to be judged.
Therefore, Lord, spare him.
Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest.

Hymn 159 Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided (Lord of the years)

1 Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided,
urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way,
sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided,
Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.

2 Lord, for that word, the Word of life which fires us,
speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze,
teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us,
Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise.

3 Lord, for our land, in this our generation,
spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care;
for young and old, for commonwealth and nation,
Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.

4 Lord, for our world; when we disown and doubt him,
loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain;
hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him,
Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.

5 Lord, for ourselves; in living power remake us,
self on the cross and Christ upon the throne;
past put behind us, for the future take us,
Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

National Anthem & Benediction

God save our gracious King!
Long live our noble King!
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the King.
