REFLECTION & POINTS FOR PRAYER
Prepared by the Congregational Prayer Group
St. Columba’s, Pont Street, & St. Andrew’s, Newcastle.
Sunday 21st February 2021, First Sunday of Lent

Worship:
Psalm 100

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
And his courts with praise;
Give thanks to him and praise his name,
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever,
His faithfulness continues through all generations.

Gospel Reading: Mark 1:9-15: The Baptism of Jesus

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

So who is this Jesus whom we seek to follow? -

One answer is given in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, chapter 2, v 6-11.

“Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness,
and being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself, and became obedient to death -
even death on a cross!

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”

Reflection: The Way It Is by William Stafford

There is a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
Or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

Prayer.
Let us daily give thanks for all God’s blessings to us:
for family, friends, kindly neighbours, warm homes,
nourishing food and unexpected joys.
But in this Covid winter season there are many who are suffering and
for all those in our now worldwide YouTube family and those we love,
we pray for:

  • those in hospital or ill at home;
  • those overwhelmed with work or caring for others;
  • those anxious about future work or study opportunities;
  • those with financial worries;
  • those diminished by loneliness and grieving;
  • those struggling with depression and addictions.

Keeping in mind who Jesus is,
we ask for his creative self-giving love
to work in the lives of those we pray for,
trusting that he always hears our prayers.

The Grace:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The love of God and
The fellowship of the Holy Spirit
Be with us all, now and evermore.
Amen.
