GLASSDOOR HOMELESS CHARITY

Based in London, Glass Door Homeless Charity offers advice, shelter and support with their community partners, helping people build a route out of homelessness.
They offer a year-round casework service to people facing homelessness through trained caseworkers based at partnering drop-in centres in West and South West London. During the hard months of winter, Glass Door provides emergency winter night shelters.
Their services are open access – this means that anyone experiencing or at risk of homelessness can turn to Glass Door, no matter who they are or where they are from.
St Columba’s and Glass Door
St Columba’s has been supporting Glass Door since they began in November 2000; we are one of the founding member churches of the charity. St Columba’s hosts a shelter one night per week, reoccurring every week from November through to April, providing a venue and team of volunteers.
We are looking for a pool of volunteers, as we are aware that people will not be able to commit to volunteering every week. A typical evening would require you to be there from 6pm to 9.30pm. Roles will include cooking, meeting, greeting and generally looking after guests. The shelter provides up to 35 guests experiencing homelessness with a place to sleep, a hot meal, breakfast and a person to talk to. If you are interested in volunteering or would like any further information, please contact the Church Office on office@stcolumbas.org.uk.

How Glass Door can help
Support & advice: Expert caseworkers offer advice, advocacy and practical support to help people build routes out of homelessness. Some of Glass Door’s services include working with guests to secure housing, a bank account and ID; access benefits and healthcare, resolve their insecure immigration status and refer them to specialist services, depending on their specific needs.
Emergency night shelter: From November to April, Glass Door runs three night shelter circuits, serving up to 105 guests each night in Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Wandsworth. At the shelters, guests are welcomed with a hot meal, a safe place to sleep and a breakfast – as well as vital support from our casework service.
If you’re in need of night shelter in London, you can go to this page on Glass Door’s website or give Glass Door a call on 020 7351 4948. If you need help with homelessness, head to one of their daytime partner drop-in centres.

RESTART

RESTART LIVES empowers London’s homeless to overcome the personal and systemic barriers they are facing and to reach their self-defined goals. From housing and employment, to mental and physical health, we offer wraparound casework and group programmes aimed at empowering each person to take positive steps that are right for them. We believe everyone deserves a safe home.
For more information on Restart Lives Charity, please visit www.restartlives.org
The current core programmes and services offered by RESTART are:
REACT: A drop in hot meal and community service, every Friday 6.30-8.30pm (St Columba’s Church, Knightsbridge). Resource fairs offering seasonal support such as warm items in Winter and sun protective items in the Summer, as well as digital inclusion items all year round.
RESTORE: A wellbeing programme offering weekly team-building fitness including football during Spring, Summer and early Autumn (Hyde Park). One to one and group therapy sessions run by a team from our paid partners, Mind, are available throughout the year.Â
RECRUIT: Group employability sessions online and accessible any time with connectivity, as well as guest volunteering at the Drop In (St Columba’s).
SUMMER AND WINTER TASTER SESSIONS: Group sessions offering guests a taste of different kinds of services which they can try with no commitment and therefore perhaps dip their toe in something new for them. Guests can then offer feedback to help us to understand their preferences and to design future programmes with them in mind. Sessions include: introduction to group therapy, therapy dogs, film club, dentist trips, registering to vote, access to MPs support, employability support, coproduction and focus groups, hospitality recruitment and training (St Columba’s, Knightsbridge).
CASEWORK: One to one wraparound support to empower individuals to create bespoke plans to reach their self-defined goals (at a range of partner locations including Hoxton Job Centre, Settle Street Job Centre, Hackney Lighthouse, all RESTART locations and ad hoc locations where a guest needs support eg council visits).
In addition, the charity runs pop up events (mini sessions that guests can walk up to and walk away from rather than commit to for a period of hours, held at the Drop-in) and spends time awareness raising (engaging with the media, running awareness/fundraiser events and partnering with schools to educate young people about homelessness).
SCOTSCARE

ScotsCare is the charity for Scots in London. Their mission is to break the cycle of deprivation experienced by some vulnerable Scots in London, by providing financial, practical, and emotional support. Although over 400 years old, the charity has evolved to give holistic wraparound support to Scots and their families, depending on their unique needs. ScotsCare supports children and families, working age adults and older people with services ranging from financial grants, advocacy, homelessness support, counselling, sheltered housing, befriending and much more.
Support begins with a needs led assessment, to provide direct services or signposting to specialist support services, depending on the individuals or families particular needs.
ScotsCare’s clients continually struggle to break free from the cycle of poverty, facing a combination of linked issues, such as unemployment, , low income, poor housing, bad health and family breakdown. Their services allow our clients to address these difficult circumstances, which enables them to improve their and their families lives and future opportunities.
ScotsCare has identified that clients of all ages often encounter loneliness and isolation, in particular the older clients. Through their social events, befriending service, sheltered housing and the ScotsCare choir program, the charity offers clients a sense of belonging within the London Scottish community.
