For Sunday 6th April 2025, Fifth Sunday of Lent

Picture1

Friends,

With the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East it is vital that we keep in our prayers the ministers and congregations of St. Andrew's Jerusalem and Tiberias, Stewart Gillan and Muriel Pearson, as well as the staff and students of Tabeetha School in Jaffa.

We remember too, our ecumenical partners and all who work for peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land. Not surprisingly, almost every Christian tradition is represented in the city of Jerusalem and one of my favourite churches is the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives. In the church can be found a mural depicting the legend that following the death and resurrection of Christ, Mary Magdalene travelled to Rome taking the gospel to Caesar. The church was built in 1888 by Tsar Alexander III in memory of his mother, and the dedication was attended by his brother and sister-in-law, Grand Duke Sergei and Grand Duchess Elizabeth, herself a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. It is not unusual in the Orthodox tradition for aristocratic widows to enter a nunnery and following Sergei's assassination in 1905  Ella, as she was called by her family, founded a nursing order, the Order of Martha and Mary.

The name of her order reflected her desire that the sisters should be dedicated to both practical service and a life of prayer. She renounced a life of unimaginable luxury to serve the poor in the name of God.  Ella was cruelly murdered during the Russian Revolution but her sister Victoria, great grandmother of the present king, rescued her remains and she was interred in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. St. Elizabeth, as she is called in the Russian Orthodox Church, is one of the Twentieth Century Martyrs commemorated on the west front of Westminster Abbey.

Picture3

In our gospel lesson this Sunday, Jesus visits the home of his friends, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus in Bethany, having recently raised Lazarus from the dead. Mary pours costly perfume over Jesus feet and washes them with her hair. Judas objects to what he sees as a waste of money, but Jesus defends Mary, knowing that her extravagant gesture is a sign of her deep gratitude and that he will soon be leaving them to go to his death.

Our scripture lessons this week prompt us to question what really matters to us and to examine our priorities - what are our true passions?

Lent Appeal 2025 – Caxton Youth Organisation. Registered Charity 1090549.

https://caxtonyouth.org/

The Caxton Youth Organisation is a small   local Westminster charity, based in Pimlico   with Clubs Rooms that are in the basement   area of a council housing estate. The charity  is already known to us as it was the recipient of our Lent Appeal 2011. Founded in  1948 by a couple of local residents in response to much needed help and support for  young people aged 11 to 25 years who have learning disabilities and young people  with autism. It provides crucial support for local families with evening clubs three  times a week: fantastic opportunities to make friends, drama workshops, play  games, life-skills, basic cooking lessons for the older ones. The charity also helps  with employment applications, finding work, or training.

With your donations we hope to raise enough funds to pay for a five-day outdoor  residential trip at a purpose-built centre in the countryside for eight young people  plus three staff. Donations would help cover the costs for accommodation, catering,  staffing, activities and transport to the centre. A chance for them to experience the  countryside and activities such as abseiling, high ropes courses, archery, pond dipping.

We are delighted to welcome guest speakers for a brief talk on  the charity during the morning service on:  Sunday 13 April (Palm Sunday) – Esther Norman, Interim - CEO
