Friends,

Families come in all shapes and sizes. They always have done. Sometimes politicians and some church leaders speak about “family values” as if there was a time when we all lived in perfectly happy, united families just like The Waltons whom some of you will remember from television in the 1970’s; but even they had their ups and downs! I suspect that the appeal of programmes like The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie was that they portrayed an ideal which for most of us was just that – an ideal, not reality. In reality families are composed of human beings living in the everyday world which is far from ideal but mostly doing their best.
The Christmas story is the story of a family. Their situation was far from ideal. A long way from home Mary gave birth in a stable and later we are told that the little family fled to safety in Egypt. This was not what Joseph imagined when he and Mary had become engaged, but in a dream, an angel tells Joseph that Mary’s child is from the Holy Spirit. He should not hesitate to marry her and that he should name the child Jesus. The Child will not only be Emmanuel, God with us – as prophesied by Isaiah – but the one who saves his people from their sins.

In the midst of the busy festive season, it is very easy to overlook the one at the heart of Christmas – Jesus. Our scripture lessons this week have Jesus right at the centre and speak to us of the good news of his coming, news that was better than anything that was expected. Mary and Joseph welcomed Jesus into their lives and created a loving family for the child and this week we will explore what Jesus’ presence with us means, and how we can help others to know the Jesus who comes to be with them.
However, and wherever you are spending Christmas, I wish you peace and joy,
William McLaren.
Note: This is the last Newsletter of 2025. It will return the week beginning 5th January. Thank you to those who send in updates and information to keep the congregation up to date and well informed. 2025 has certainly been an active year, with a great deal to be thankful for. It is very likely that 2026 will bring more of the same. William takes a sabbatical in January, rejoining us in February. We wish him well. In the meantime, may you have a peaceful and joyful Christmas and a 2026 full of good things. Angus.

This Sunday: Pont Street Carols is a very special opportunity to draw together and celebrate the many communities that gather throughout the year at St Columba’s. Started last year, we aim to offer annual carol service to as wide a group pf attendee as possible. Much of the work of Marcus Railton, who has been producing our social media throughout the year, is aimed at fostering deeper connections with the many user groups who utilise the building. Pont Street Carols is an invitation to celebrate the season with others who know and value this special place, not just on a Sunday, and not just at Christmas.
